The Accident

January 31, 2010

A skier for more than 20 years, Margo spent an afternoon of fun at Keystone Ski Resort in Keystone, Colorado with her brother Billy and sister-in-law Teresa.  The day ended in an unthinkable accident when Margo hit a patch of ice and lost control, being thrown into a tree. When her brother helped her to her feet they realized her shoulder was injured. The ski patrol took her to the Dillon Emergency Room where doctors diagnosed her with a broken clavicle and sent her home.

A few days later, Margo couldn’t walk, so Teresa called an ambulance and took her to Lutheran Emergency Room in Wheat Ridge. ER doctors prescribed pain medication and sent her home.

Despite the medicine, Margo was still in severe pain the next day. Teresa took her to an Evergreen urgent care facility where she received a shot for the pain. Doctor's suspected that she had a sciatic nerve injury and she was advised to schedule a visit with an orthopedic specialist for evaluation.

Margo visited an orthopedist who indicated that they couldn’t find evidence of sciatic damage as suspected by the urgent care facility. They also advised her that unfortunately, until she was once again mobile, they would not be able to assist with her treatment.

Again, Margo returned to the urgent care facility. They offered her a different prescription medicine for pain and sent her home.

Margo was in such pain, Teresa called for an ambulance to transport Margo back to the emergency room at Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge. This time, doctors discovered that the pain was due to complications of sepsis - complications that were causing her kidneys to fail. Margo was admitted immediately to the critical care unit and placed on life support.

Margo is now at Sloan's Rehab. They are working really hard with her to learn to walk again On her first day, she stood for 18 minutes! The staff tells us that's quite an accomplishment - but it's no surprise to us. Our Margo is strong and determined.
